Physical Literacy - January 2026
Lesson: Physical Development
Class: Young Explorers Year: 2025 - 2026
In the Young Explorers room, we had a physical literacy day carrying this on throughout the week.
We took part in an indoor obstacle course, climbing through ladders, jumping from stepping stones and dancing with the instruments. We explored dough disco, where we strengthened our hand muscles whilst listening to music of their choice. We did large scale art of ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’, using our gross motor skills to make big marks and practicing our pencil grip. We enjoyed some group dancing using the pompoms and streamers.
Some of our older children went into the big garden and rode on the bicycles and scooters, climbed up to the slide and made their way across the grass stumps, developing our balancing skills.
Physical literacy in the early years is all about helping children build the confidence, skills and love for movement that set them up for life. Through play, young children learn how their bodies move and what they can do. These early movement experiences support not just physical development, but also social skills, confidence and overall wellbeing, creating a strong foundation for lifelong activity and healthy habits. đŸ’›
